Sustainability Is Good For Business | Learnings From The Launch Of The Sustainable Business Network
On 19 November, the Garden Room at Powerscourt Estate was filled with energy, optimism, and a genuine desire to make a difference as the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) officially launched. The event brought together businesses from across Wicklow and Ireland, all at different stages of their sustainability journeys, but united by a shared commitment to positive change. If you missed it, we have all the insights and tips that came from this sustainability-inspiring event.
Key Themes From The Day
1. The Business Case For Sustainability
A recurring message from the speakers was that sustainability isn’t just good for the planet – it’s good for business. Susan Collins, owner of Home of Hair, shared how taking the sustainability route has allowed her business to thrive, recently opening a second premises. The savings achieved through sustainable practices have been reinvested into the business and its people, demonstrating that responsible choices can drive growth and resilience.
2. Bravery And Leadership
“Be braver, be vulnerable, and reach out for help,” advised Darragh Flynn of The Happy Pear. Businesses were encouraged to find their own path and purpose, rather than simply following others. Our team at SBN and the wider network were highlighted as a source of expert support for those ready to take the next step.
3. Practical Action
Susan Collins reminded attendees to “pick one thing at a time – choose what’s most important to you and your customers.” Many participants admitted feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of sustainability, but the advice was clear: progress starts with small, manageable steps.
4. Transparency And Engagement
Sharing progress openly and involving teams and communities was highlighted as a driver for trust and impact. From regular wellness days to giving back to local communities, businesses were encouraged to celebrate their achievements and be transparent about their journey. This is a way of encouraging and motivating teams to continue to put sustainability as a priority, as well as your clients and customers.
5. Unexpected Opportunities
Lúgh Ó Braonáin of Climate Connected noted, “Unexpected things may be needed – every cooperative started small, but cooperation became the key.” The event showcased how collaboration and openness to new ideas can unlock opportunities and drive innovation.
Insights From The Panel And Attendees
Sustainability Means More Than Just the Planet
The panel and speakers reminded us that sustainability is about more than environmental impact – it’s about people, communities, and building resilient businesses. As Cathaoirleach Lourda Scott said, “The Sustainable Business Network empowers businesses across Wicklow and the island of Ireland to think and act sustainably, to embrace practices that protect our environment, strengthen our economy, and support the wellbeing of future generations.”
Every Journey Starts Somewhere
Many attendees shared that they are only starting out on their sustainability journey. The complexity of the topic can feel overwhelming, but the advice from the panel was clear: take baby steps, focus on one thing at a time, and celebrate progress. As one attendee put it, “I was slightly overwhelmed with the complexity of the topic but what I learned at the event was to take baby steps and one step at a time.”
The Power of Sharing and Community
The event was praised for its open atmosphere and the opportunity to meet local businesses with a shared interest in sustainability. Attendees valued hearing the speakers’ journeys to certification and the practical challenges they faced. “You chose fantastic speakers – very different backgrounds but you could take something away from each of them,” said one guest.
Practical Support and Realistic Solutions
Rob Rankin, Managing Director of SBN, captured the spirit of the network in his speech:
“We know that sustainability can be a daunting subject for business owners, but we’re here to help by speaking sustainability in a business person’s language – practical, non-judgemental, and positive. The network is a place where all types of businesses with genuine purpose can connect, trade ideas, and do business with each other. Whether you’re just starting out or are already advanced, SBN offers support, training, and a vibrant community to help make your business stronger, more sustainable, and more successful.”
